The Eucharist and (or) the Pre-Christian Past: a Theological Re-Evaluation of Čajkanović’s Research of Slava

In Veselin Čajkanović’s work, his investigations of the phenomenon of krsna slava or krsno ime stand out. The importance of his observations stems not only from the fundamental importance of this phenomenon for the question of the character of the Serbian people and their religiosity, but also from Čajkanović’s exceptional dedication to shedding light on the question of the origin and essence of the custom of slava. Seeing as one of the fundamental aims of his scholarly work was the reconstruction of the “old Serbian faith”, i.e., the pagan layers in Serbian folk beliefs, it seems that his research into the phenomenon of slava is in no small measure marked by this preoccupation. That is why it is very important that we first understand Čajkanović’s point of view regarding the non-Christian culture and biblical teachings, and only then proceed to consider the relevance of his research on slava. The present author tries to expand Čajkanović’s paradigms founded on assumptions of the deeply pre-Christian character of the slava by documenting possible ritualistic and semiological parallels between the slava and the Eucharist.
