Pavle Vasić (1907–1993) was the author of the first comprehensive overview of the 20th-century Serbian applied arts, Applied Arts in Serbia 1900–1978: Prolegomena for a History of Applied Arts in Our Country, a book published in 1981 by the Applied Artists and Designers Association of Serbia. As indicated by its subtitle, which emphasizes its role as a prolegomenon—an introduction preceding a more extensive study—it is a concise volume. The book consists of ninety-nine pages, including notes and valuable indexes of names and works. Notably, it contains no reproductions, which is unusual for publications dedicated to the visual arts. Vasić’s awareness of the fragmented nature of contemporary knowledge regarding modern Serbian applied arts influenced the structure of the book. It is composed of brief reflections, organized both chronologically and thematically according to different applied art disciplines. The length of these segmented texts was determined by the availability of sources and the extent of previous research.
